Our History

Apex Medical Center, Igbo-Ukwu, was founded by Professor Uchenna Nwosu, MD in 1982 in a very medically deprived rural setting of Igbo-Ukwu lacking both electricity and running water. He did so against all odds, determined to bring orthodox medical treatment to his people.

With no registered nurses available to help him, he had to train Nurses’ Aides himself to enable him to carry out his self-imposed mission. Supported by a highly patriotic Board of Directors chaired by Chief Eric Nwobi, Okeide Igbo-Ukwu, he extended his hospital branches to other rural towns badly in need of similar healthcare, namely, Uga in Aguata LGA, Nanka in Orumba LGA and Nkwelle-Ezunaka in Oyi LGA, before finally establishing a Multispecialty Hospital with Intensive Care Unit on Secretariat Road, off Aroma Junction at the Anambra State Capital, Awka in 2013.

The Nurses’ Aide program ended in 2021, when he applied to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) for approval for training of qualified and certified nurses.

Upon meeting the NMCN requirements Apex College of Nursing Sciences, Igbo-Ukwu received its accreditation on 09 June 2024, with Pastor Promise Ekeagba, FAIPHP, as the pioneer Provost. It further received the Anambra State Governor’s signature on its State Enabling Law on 10 June 2024 and admitted its pioneer students immediately to become the first private College of Nursing Sciences in Anambra State.

The Meaning of our Logo

The triangle signifies the Apex Hospital Company, which was founded in 1981 to bring orthodox medicine, public health, and health education to the rural community of Igbo-Ukwu in Aguata LGA, Anambra State. Its success paved the way for other private hospitals to venture into rural areas, thereby improving the overall healthcare in the Southeastern parts of Nigeria.

The oil lamp symbolises the light and diligence of nursing care. It is associated with Florence Nightingale nicknamed THE LADY WITH THE LAMP.
Though British, she was born in Florence, Italy, in 1820, when nursing was not yet a profession. In 1854, she organized a group of 38 female nurses in Britain to help treat the wounded British soldiers in a Military Hospital in modern-day Turkey during a religious war waged in Crimea between the British and French against the Russians.

While the army officers in the hospital slept at night in that era of no electricity, Florence Nightingale attended to the wounded soldiers, carrying her oil lamp from bed to bed, hence she was called THE LADY WITH THE LAMP. She made many hygenic changes on the hospital, overhauling the hospital environment.

“Florence Nightingale returned from the Crimean War as a heroine, and the Nightingale fund was set up to fund her continued work. *By 1860, she had used the donations to establish the world’s first professional nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. The Nightingale School of Nursing raised the reputation of nursing as a profession and had a global impact with similar schools set up in America, Africa, and Australia.”*¹

She was awarded Royal Red Cross and Order of Merit by Queen Victoria. Though bedridden with an illness compatible with the brucellosis germ, she continued to write papers and pamphlets on healthcare until her death at age of 90.

Our motto, Knowledge & Service with Compassion, combines the Knowledge of the College and Service with Compassion of the Apex Hospital System.
